How You Can Help Kaua'i Nurses

What the Community Can Do To Support the Wilcox Memorial Hospital Nurses

The Wilcox Memorial Hospital nurses are very grateful for all the tremendous support and encouragement we have received from the community, not only on Kaua'i, but from the general public. It is clear that the public understands that the issues we are fighting for (safe patient care and safe working conditions) are their issues as well. The nurses are seeking a commitment by this hospital to hire and retain the staff needed to take care of patients safely, without forcing nurses to work overtime when they are too fatigued or ill to provide safe nursing care.

Many have asked what they can do to support the nurses. Here are some suggestions:

  • Help is Collect Petitions.
We have prepared a petition form that we would greatly appreciate that organizations and individuals downlaod and use this form to collect as many signatures as possible expressing support for the Wilcox nurses and calling on HPH to equitably settle and end this strike. [DOWNLOAD PETITION]

  • Call, email or write Hawaii Pacific Health CEO Chuck Sted.
Tell him you support the nurses and their stand in these contract negotiations. Tell him to get back to the table and settle this contract NOW. 55 Merchant Street, Honolulu, HI 96813, email: chucks@kapiolani.org, phone # 808-535-7401.

  • Call or write Kathy Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
Tell her you support the nurses and their stand in these negotiations and urge her to allow a settlement of this contract. 3420 Kuhio Highway, Lihue, Hawaii 96766, phone # 808-245-1122.

  • Donate to the Hawaii Nurses' Association (checks should include "Wilcox" in the memo field); mail them to Hawaii Nursesą Association, 677 Ala Moana Blvd., Suite 301., Honolulu, HI 96813.

  • Organize an event or activity to draw attention to the nursesą plight. Groups are encouraged to organize events, demonstrations and other activities to support the nurses. However, call the strike office to find out what else is being planned to ensure your event does not conflict with other activities.

  • Food drive. Collect as many wholesome, non-perishable food items (cans and packages) as you can manage. Bring thm to the picket line or calll Strike Headquaters (808-375-0025).

  • Bring food and beverages to the nurses on the strike line.

  • Walk the Line for the nurses. As a matter of fact, as the Wilcox nurses spend more time out in the community rallying broad support for their crusade, ever more help by supporters is called for on the picket line. Other unions and community groups have volunteered to cover the picket lines on a regular basis. Please check with Strike Headquarters (808-375-0025) to pick a block of time.

Communicate:
Messages of support may be sent to the nurses of Wilcox Hospital c/o Clyde Hayashi on Kaua'i, cell # 808-497-3824 or e-fax #206-202-1266, or the Strike Headquarters phone #808-375-0025 (do not leave messages there).

In Honolulu call Aggie Pigao Cadiz, cell # 808-561-0546. Regular mail for the Kaua'i nurses can be sent c/o HNA at 677 Ala Moana Blvd., Ste. 301, Honolulu 96813.
